Hi, it’s Seth and Evan!

Today we’ll be discussing WHY WE ARE OBSESSED WITH ASHTRAYS!!!

Simply put, how couldn’t we be? As avid cannabis enthusiasts, consumers, and if we don’t mind saying, connoisseurs, life has practically FORCED us to become consumed with the form and function of ashtrays. We interact with them so, so, so much that it was practically predestined for us to one day make them.

Our love of ashtrays started in the same place many of pivotal moments in our lives took place, high school. Back then it was mostly pop cans, or what you might call “soda” cans. If we owned an ashtray, our parents would have found it and come to the logical conclusion we were smoking enough to necessitate having an ashtray. So we didn’t really own them. And on the few occasions we did, our parents found them.

Eventually we found this ashtray design, and fell in love:

For years, this was our go to ashtray. It was so aesthetically pleasing. The ash and roaches could be knocked into the inner chamber. It looked nice if it was just sitting there with the lid up too (no one wants to see old bits of used joints and piles of ash). But once we got married and became homeowners we realized these don’t really tie a room together. They lack character. Pizzazz. Chutzpah. Moxy. And we need those things in our lives, especially Moxy. So we started buying ashtrays. Lots of ashtrays. Heaps of ashtrays. Piles of ashtrays. Then Houseplant started buying ashtrays! EVERYONE WAS IN AN ASHTRAY BUYING FRENZY!!!

And just when we thought it couldn’t get any crazier, Seth’s wife Lauren convinced him to go to a pottery class, and henceforth Seth became obsessed with ceramics and took ashtrays to the next level.

And so naturally ashtrays designed by Seth became a trademark element of Houseplant. And then we just kept on going, reaching out to unique artists like Melanie Abrantes, Ani Kasten, Adam Field, Concrete Cat, Facture, and Studio Cofield (to name a few) who each brought their own flare to the humble ashtray. And we started to design and create different ashtrays for different scenarios, like our Outdoor Lamp Ashtray, which is perfect for camping or backyard smoking or even front porch smoking. And our Pebble Match Strike which actually looks like a beautiful piece of art instead of an ashtray you bought off Amazon!

We just want ashtrays that work, are easy to clean, and look good. However, what looks good is open to interpretation, so we need to create a LOT of different ashtrays!

And it’s ever evolving! We keep thinking of fun new ideas, meeting incredible new artists and craftspeople, and realizing little twists to how, where, and with whom we smoke.

One day we’ll have to figure out how to make an ashtray for the people living on Mars and virtual ashtrays for the metaverse. And we couldn’t’ be more excited to tackle these exciting new arenas of ashtray-dome.

Ashfully yours, Seth & Evan
